Blogtoberfest Day 10 – An unexpected award AND a vintage button giveaway…

Firstly, I’m honoured to have received an award from my fellow mad scientist Ulixis. I’ve only been blogging for a few weeks, so this is a real thrill! I will pass it on to 7 more bloggers in the next few weeks, when I’ve found my feet in blogland, and have a few other blogs that I’ll visit regularly. But I’ll start off today with awarding it to Big Cat’s Emporium for her wundabah concept Blogtoberfest!

So  the idea is to display the award on your blog, and send it to 7 other deserving recipients!

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Secondly, I thought I’d join in the Blogtoberfest spirit and have a couple of Vintage Button Giveaways!! The first is a lovely bunch of flower-themed vintage buttons mostly from the 1930s – 1950s. (Click pics to enlarge).

The second the two pictures below) is a cute lot of buttons for children, some vintage some not (the buttons that is!). They include some vintage ducks and fish from the 1950s, Czech glass smiley faces, the cutest little pencils, some great two-piece buttons – phones, strawberries, planes, cars – a 1950s card of hand-painted fish, and a few other bits and pieces.

Just leave a comment on this post and let me know which lot you would like. I’ll draw the random winners on 25th October. If one person wins both lots I’ll re-draw one lot to make it fair for everyone. So drop me a line – I’d really like to hear what you would use these for if you won.

PS. I’m happy to post these overseas.

For more Blogtoberfest fun visit Big Cat’s Emporium.

BLOG UPDATE: Oh wow! I’ve just worked out how to put images in my sidebar! Now all I have to do is work out how to make them link back to that particular site and I’ll be really chuffed!!!

  1. Hi Ms Bowerbird, I’ve found your blog through Ms Hen, and what an amazing collection of buttons you have….buttons are one of those things that I have n the back of my mind to look for when I’m out op-shopping and seem to always forget. I love the flower themed vintage buttons, they are gorgeous just as they are, in one lovely colour coded jumble, though I think I would sew them all over a beret just like that! I’m looking forward to more visits here and to checking out your science as art blog roll!

  2. Yay for Blogtoberfest giveaways! And well done on the award 😉

If I was lucky enough to win a lovely lot of buttons…well, the kids one would of course go on some handknitted garmetns for my little ones, then probably onto a wall-hanging of some sort as a keepsake once they grew out of the knits. The others would need a little more thinking, and a little more blog-surfing for inspiration!

  3. I’m looking, and these sites are blowing my mind…..remind me what a miraculous, beautiful, creative universe we are a part of. Thanks for listing them all here for perusal!

  4. Congrats on receiving the award Liz…you deserve it 🙂 that’s the first award I got too, what a buzz! I love giveaways by the way, who doesn’t lol! Awwww tough choice but I’ll go with the first ones, I think…I love using vintage buttons on my craft projects ie peg bags and craft bags 🙂

  5. Yay!! You got an award, best to you!! OOOOOW buttons, the firrt batch needs a home with me, use them? I think not! They are to look at, count ,place in little piles and then into a mason jar for display. Thanks! for the fun giveaway.

  6. What cute kids buttons! I want those! I am not quite sure what I would use them for yet. I am into shadow boxes right now, so I might make some children’s themed shadow boxes and add them. I made a Dick and Jane themed box a while back. You can see if you scroll through my Vintage Thingies Thursdays.

  7. Oh, I love the flowers, very nice.

  8. Very strange! I added a comment and it’s not here now!?! That sometimes happens. Anyway, here goes again. I love the vintage buttons. I collect all manner of things from the 30’s (Including my house which was built in 1938!) Any way I am always on the lookout for lovely vintage buttons to use in my jewellery pieces particularly my crocheted pieces. If I was lucky enough to win I would gladly make you a necklace in your favourite colour. (I know you already crochet but I still think it’s nice to have something made by someone else!)

  9. You deserve the award! 🙂

I would love to get my hands on those flower buttons!

  10. hello fellow MSOEer! I’d keep those buttons all to myself as they are far too pretty to be using for stuff (and I have a recent button obsession going on!)
    xx

  11. These are fantastic! I looove the first batch especially. What WOULDN’T I use them for??! Aprons, scarflettes, sweaters, and on and on….

  12. Yippee! I absolutely love buttons and I would love to win!

  13. Ooh, the colours on those flower buttons are too good. They’re like candy! If I were a winner, I’d do a little dance, and then I’d sew some of them into the middle of fabric flowers to put all over old t-shirts. Glam. The rest I’d just hoard in a jar in the sunshine.

  14. ohhhhhhh I cant contain my excitement!!! I love vintage buttons. Please count me in. and as to what I would do with them was wanting to make one of those funky bracelets I have seen done about blogland. Thanks for the super blogfest giveaway you have made my day!!!

  15. Hurray for Blogtoberfest! I can’t believe you have such amazing buttons and you’re giving them away! I really love the flower ones! I’ve been wanting to spice up some old cardigans and dress up some soft the sofites that I make.

The other buttons are great too, but I think they deserve to go to someone with a little boy or girl who can show them off at school! So just put me in the flower button draw!

Can’t wait to read more of your blogtoberfest goodness!

  16. Oooh the first lot are gorgeous gorgeous! Curly Pops put me onto you lovely blog 😀

  17. oh what a lovely giveaway! Congrats on your award! I love all the buttons as I collect them too but I guess my favourites would have to be…….I can’t really chose they are all fab, but I guess the first ones would be my absolute favs!!!!!!!!

  18. Oh wow, oh wow, such deliciousness! I’m drooling!!
I’ve come over here via Ms Curlypops. My faves of the buttons would be the first two collections.
I would use them for my quilt I’m making for my daughter or on a dress for her. Hooray for Blogtoberfest!!

  19. I love ALL the buttons. Not Fussy! I make jewelery using recycled vintage lino and buttons, and have an unhealthy obsession with both! If ever you would like to do a swap, just let me know.
I have just announced the winner of my Blogtoberfest giveaway, but may even have another one before the end of the festival!
I have spent alot of time in the beautiful Blue Mountains, I have two brothers living there, and one day dream of living there myself.
Gorgeous blog xx Liz aka Betty Jo

  22. Oooh, they are all so fantastic! Nothing like a giveaway to get all us lurkers out of the woodwork! Ms Curlypops recommended you and now I’m a subscriber! Love your blog! Those flower buttons do it for me, I make button necklaces and brooches and would love to make a Spring themed one from those buttons! You are super-generous!

  23. WOW a button lover, so close to home Yayyyy! I’ll be popping in to say Hi and drool at your selection at Canterbury … I’ll bring my money with me 😉 Congratulations on your blog and Blogtoberfest, you’re the best!

  24. Hi 🙂
I found your blog thru curly pops
but have seen your stuff on etsy after a cyber friend posted a link to your store
she loves your buttons as do I!

I would lurve the 2nd pack of buttons and have my hot glue gun ready and waiting to turn them into hair clips for my daughter to match the dresses/outfits I make her
I think the pink areoplanes are my fave as my daughter has a fascination with planes and blows kisses whenever she sees one (the family joke that she will follow her aunty and become a flight attendant….im thinking maybe a pilot instead 🙂 )

  30. Oh, Liz. These are wonderful. After I quit drooling over them, I would probably use them on cards and journals.

  31. Gorgeous buttons and some raise some happy memories! If I had those, I think I would share the joy with my small grandchildren and perhaps make a hanging or even use them in some freeform knitting to pass down to others.

  32. Hi there! If I won this giveaway, I would want them all 🙂 But if I had to choose just one, then I would say lot #2 (the kiddie lot).

    Thanks so much!

I got your link through Curly Pops..

  37. Thanks so much for the lovely award. I really appreciate it. I would love to put myself in the running for the first lot of buttons. If I won them I’d have to make a wall hanging for my studio I think.

  38. Hiya! I do love some Blogtoberfest. Buttons are a wonderful thing, I still haven’t trained myself out of eyeing them off for sewing into my dredlocks, even though I cut them off a year ago. Now I need to work on some other quality button uses. The children’s ones are great! Probably because I am a big big child.

What an awesome collection of buttons you have. Your button flowers are lovely…

  39. […] you haven’t already entered my Blogtoberfest giveaway, please click here for a chance to win some beautiful vintage […]

  43. Oh I forgot to say (if I was lucky enough to win)that I would pick the vintage flower buttons.
    Cheers,
    Sandi.

  44. Hi, I love your button collection. I remember those ducky ones – had some on some clothing when I was young so that prooves they must be vintage. HAHA Cherrie

  45. so many pretty buttons! hmm I love the flower buttons, would look really nice on the pencil wrap I am making. Add a bit of colour to it.

  46. Oh my, you’re giving these away??? They are gorgeous!! I particularly love the kids buttons – I think I’d be making some kids clothes to go with the buttons.

  47. Hey, I’m new to blogging too and isn’t it wonderful!
I love, love, love all of your supercute buttons and I think they would be perfect for embellishing some sweet, felt hairclips for a sweet little person (like my daughter).
Good luck with your blog, and congrats on your award 🙂

  48. oh dear! how in the world would one ever pick which bunch? they are both fabulous! the flowers are so pretty! and the little animals so sweet! if i won either set some would end up on clothes for my little girl, some on doll clothes and some on embelishments for embroidery projects.

    what fun!

  49. Found you through the bloggie fest. If I won the buttons, after admiring them, I would use them for just about anything, I have found. Knitting projects, for my grandbebe girl’s clothes, papercraft decor, real sewing even! Thanks for the offer.

  50. I’ve been enjoying your button loveliness over in Flickr. I love the look of vintage buttons… they certainly don’t make such beauties anymore. I love the picture of the flower themed one. I love to embellish my garments and fabric handbags with buttons so that would probably be what I’d use them for.

  51. I really adore the first lot of buttons! I collect vintage buttons as well, and also vintage patterns. I like to re-create 1940s fashion and sometimes embellish the clothing with vintage buttons. I also use vintage buttons in my various craft projects. What a great stash!

  52. Ooooooh the pretty flowers would be adorable for my little petals. All girls love pretties!

  53. Gorgeous selection of buttons, but you already know how much I like your buttons!
Please don’t enter me for your giveaway – you’ve already been so generous to me.

  54. I love the flower ones. I think they’d be perfect for catches on a whole bunch of little purses and clutches.

    I’d adore them!

  55. I love buttons. I have button mania. I use the ones I’ve collected to decorate bags and purses and also to embellish scrappy quilts. I also use the two hole buttons when jointing the arms and legs of my dolls. Even if I don’t win, whoever gets these beauties is a lucky ducky.

  56. I’d choose the first set of buttons. I use them as pieces when I make pins and sometimes bracelets. If I won the children’s buttons I’d probably use them in scrapping & card making, or hair do-dads.

  57. I LOVE LOVE buttons and I’d probably use them to make a buttonlet like the ones on my blog! 🙂 The vintage ones are the best!!!

  58. Hi there, what a generous giveaway! I love lot 2 and would use them on my favourite new dress pattern the simple servant frock (from Sugar City Journal). My 1 1/2 year old girl loves ducks and planes.

  59. i think the vintage flower buttons are divine.
i would use the most of them for my current foray in making fabric envelopes.
    keep up with the blogging.
    xx

  60. Wow!! What cute buttons! I love those kiddy ones – the airplanes, ducks, fish – oh my! 🙂

  61. Oooh! I love the flower buttons. I think if I had those I would love them so much I wouldn’t be able to use them. They are like little gems. Actually, I think I’d make a little zippy bag and sew them all on the front so I could enjoy them all together.

  62. […] forget to leave a comment on my earlier post if you want to enter my vintage button giveaway, being drawn Sat evening 18th […]

  63. i’m having so much fun blog hopping during blogtoberfest! I’d use these on ponytail holders for my little girl 🙂

  67. Hi There, and thank you for doing such a wonderful giveaway! I LOVE buttons. I especially love the 2nd lot (the one with ducks and fish and strawberries). I am 7 months pregnant with my first child, so I have many projects on hand. I am sewing baby booties that these buttons would look great on, and my mom (1st time grandma-to-be) is knitting a gorgeous sweater that these buttons would look stunning on!

  68. […] I now have a whopping 60 entrants in my vintage button giveaway! If you haven’t yet entered see my earlier post and leave a comment there. I will draw the winners this Saturday evening, […]

  69. Wow – pretty, pretty, pretty.

Some of them I would use to dress up boring cardigans, but I also like the idea of starting a “button sweater,” with cute buttons sewn on the front as pure decoration.

  70. Yay! I love the flowery ones – so pretty. Congrats on your recognition. 🙂

  71. Those are great buttons, and I’m always pleased to find someone else who uses the word chuffed!

  72. Wow! I love buttons. They are so much a part of our history that is, sadly, ignored.
I have used buttons on greeting cards and my daughter does a lot of sewing and knitting.
I am going to try making shell buttons out of pieces of sea shells that I collected this past spring while vacationing in North Carolina. What a beautiful beach that was and the shelling was fantastic.
Thank you for sharing with us.
    Lois

  73. They are lovely! I’ve recently found a love for buttons.

  74. the flower buttons are pretty, i like to add buttons to my clothes as decoration :o)
